Yes, spring is here again...it seems to be coming around scarily quickly these days!!
The blossom is almost over and we are taking off the final branches of the trees as part of the major pruning campaign, before we have a small break from pruning to take care of other jobs around the farm until we get back into the summer pruning ready for when the cherries get bigger & start to ripen...you have to like pruning if you are an orchardist!!
We will be making two changes in regards to our website ordering this year, and are as follows:
1. The grade of cherries that will be available is now classed as "farm grade" as opposed to "first grade". The only difference being that farm grade will have a few more imperfections and "not quite perfect" cherries in the boxes. This is how we originally graded our cherries and over the years this has morphed in to first grade, creating an amount of food wastage that has become unacceptable to us, so we are going to do something about it.
There will be no price rise this year as was originally intended, the same taste, flavour & size of the cherries will still be there, it's just that the will be a few more not as "visually stunning" cherries in each box.
2. 2kg boxes will be the only option for ordering cherries this year. We can hear the cries of disappointment now... :) We decided on this for a number of reasons, the main one being that the cherries don't travel as well in the bigger boxes, we have had a number of issues over the years with cherries arriving to their destination in bad condition, resulting in even more food wastage. There is more weight in the bigger boxes, and more pressure that can be put on each cherry during the transportation process leading to a greater chance of damage.
Our website orders have continued to grow over the years and we have basically out grown our existing packing facilities...but when you look at upgrading there is only one option...BIG... and the reality is we simply don't grow enough cherries to make a bigger packing facility financially viable.
As a small family run farm with the original intention of keeping Mike out of trouble during retirement, we have decided to stay with our roots and focus on what we do best...the growing part. A cherry packing "business" is a whole other can of worms that will only take our focus away from what we do best and we decided we don't want to go down that path.
We trust that this email finds everyone well and we are looking forward to hearing from our regular customers when the picking season starts just around the corner.
