Cherry postal orders closed for the 2016/2017 season
There are only a handful of pickers in the orchard now as the last of the cherries are getting picked tomorrow.
The trees, and the people, are starting to wind down and recover from what has been a busy 3 weeks.
The season started late due to summer taking its time to get going. Then there were significant rain events on the 30th Dec, then again on the 2nd of Jan, where we all held our breath and waited to see the extent of the splitting that the rain can cause, which turned of to be fairly significant.
When the season did start, not all the cherries were ripe at the same time meaning we had to colour pick. This slows the pickers down and requires much closer supervision to ensure that the colour standard is maintained.
Once the season got underway and the cherries ripened up and the pickers settled down we got into a rhythm and things started to go along nice and smoothly until the end of this week when last of the cherries will be picked for this season.
A few days will taken off for some R&R, then we are back in the orchard where the pruning will start. The trees will be fertilised and sprayed to help them recover from the picking season and to help fight the cherry slug and aphids that are now back into the orchard and things will start to return to normal.
We would like to thank everyone for their support throughout the season this year and we look forward to supplying big, fat, dark, juicy, sweet WOODSTOCK cherries to everyone next year! 🙂
Regards,
Mike, Carmel & Andrew
