Early Varieties in Time for Christmas!!

Since the harvest has finished, the trees have been been fertilised through the irrigation system, had a winter spray applied and are now enjoying a well earned rest preparing for the coming season.

Mike & Andrew have been busy expanding the orchard, planting some early varieties just in time for Christmas (unfortunately there wont be any fruit for about two years as the trees need time to mature). While the frosty winter mornings have provided their challenges (the least of which is getting out of bed!!) they help give the trees the required number of chill hours (below 7 degrees C) to break dormancy in early spring.

Pruning has also commenced to allow enough sunlight into the trees to ripen the fruit.

Four early varieties are being planted as well a “test” section where a number of varieties are being planted to test their suitability to Tasmanian conditions.

All the planting & pruning needs to be completed by mid July as we will be attending the National Cherry Conference in Canberra this year to keep up to date with the latest developments and information within the Cherry industry.

All the best,

Mike & the Woodstock Cherry Team.
